Happy Birthday Warren !

Warren Buffett, a billionaire investor turned 93 today. If you want to learn investing and make money, listening to Warren is enough. While many of us want to be like him, it is just not possible to be so for many reasons. Some of them could be as follows:

1. Long life span with good health: 

One in five thousand live beyond the age of 90. And most of those who live beyond 90, will be suffering from health issues, needing support and care. But Warren at 93, runs a business, actively manages billions of dollars. Though age has made his body weak, he seems to be healthy and his mind is sharp as ever. He still reads everyday, tracks economic data and makes investment decisions. Also shares his knowledge and wisdom.

We already know Warren made most his wealth after he turned 60. Well, most of us would be retired by 60 and dead by 70. So forget about compounding doing the same magic for us.

2. Not upgrading lifestyle:

Any common man would like to show-off with the increase in income. Even a level headed guy would want a comfortable living. But Warren still lives in the same house he had bought many decades ago in a sleepy village. He bought second hand cars and ate at McDonalds. He did not upgrade his lifestyle. He reinvested all of his savings, That helped him become what he has become. He is a living example for his quote "If you buy things you do not need, soon you will have to sell things you need". This is when most of the world lives on debt and borrows to spend. 

3. Compounding Knowledge before compounding money:

After the graduation, he did not take up a job for money. He volunteered to work under Ben Graham to learn investing. He has spent most of his waking life reading. Not living in a town like New York saved him from commute time, flashy parties, celebrations and extravagant social circle. He did not need any kind of validation from the society. He just drove to his office to read multiple newspapers, company reports, and all the relevant things to keep him sane and make wise decisions. He compounded his knowledge before compounding his investments. This is when we can't wait to upgrade lifestyle, drive Ferrari and live in a massive mansion.

4. Staying within the circle of competence

Those who earn name and fame, be it movie actors, businessmen or scientists, often stay within their circle of competence. It helps them to keep focus and avoid errors. Warren did it too. He not only limited himself to the world of investing, he put money only in the businesses he understood well. While it is natural for most us to wander, and become error prone without proficiency in any one of the chosen subjects, Warren wisely avoided all those temptations. Even after becoming wealthy, he did not want to become a politician or try any other profession. Even when he decided to give away most of his wealth, rather than starting his own foundation, he gave most of it to foundations who are already doing a good job there. He chose to stick to running his own business which he was good at. Warren's investing style is simple but having his temper is difficult.

While I can give a dozen more reasons why we can't become another Warren, the above reasons are enough to indicate he is an unique person. While we are unique in different ways, becoming another Warren might not be a goal we all want to pursue either. He is a role model for many of us and not for all necessarily. Even if someone wants to follow his footsteps, you know it is quite rare to have a long life span having a sane mindset, not giving in to temptations and go on building the wisdom.

Warren who made billions and gave it away too, should be better known for his common sense, long term thinking and situational wisdom rather than the wealth he amassed. He has left behind a cult of investors and has motivated many across the world.

If possible, I would like to have the temperament of Warren, if not his wealth.

ಗುಡ್ಡದ ಮೇಲೆ ಗುಡಿ ಕಟ್ಟಿದ ಮನುಷ್ಯನೇ ಮೆಟ್ಟಿಲು ಕಟ್ಟಿದ

ಹಲವಾರು ಶತಮಾನಗಳಿಂದ ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ಮೇಲೆ ವಿರಾಜಮಾನನಾಗಿರುವ ಶ್ರೀ ಮಲ್ಲಿಕಾರ್ಜುನ ನನ್ನ ಇಷ್ಟ ದೈವ. ಚಿಕ್ಕಂದಿನಿಂದ ಶ್ರಾವಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಟ್ಟ ಹತ್ತಿ ಆತನ ದರ್ಶನ ಮಾಡುವ ಅಭ್ಯಾಸ ಇನ್ನು ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಹೋಗಿಲ್ಲ. ಬೆಟ್ಟ ಹತ್ತಿದ ಪ್ರತಿ ಬಾರಿಯೂ ಹೊಸ ವಿಚಾರಗಳು ಮೂಡುತ್ತವೆ. ಅದು ಈ ಬಾರಿಯೂ ಕೂಡ ಆಯಿತು.

ದೇವರು ಮನುಷ್ಯನನ್ನು ಹುಟ್ಟಿಸಿದು ಎಂದು ನಾವೆಲ್ಲ ಅಂದುಕೊಂಡರೆ, ಮನುಷ್ಯನೇ ದೇವರನ್ನು ಹುಟ್ಟಿ ಹಾಕಿದ್ದು ಎಂದು ಸೂಚಿಸುತ್ತದೆ ಡಾರ್ವಿನ್ ವಿಕಾಸವಾದ ಸಿದ್ಧಾಂತ. ಅವೆರಡನ್ನು ಒಟ್ಟು ಮಾಡಿ, ಒಂದು ಕಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಬಹು ಕಾಲ ಭಕ್ತಿಯಿಂದ ಪೂಜಿಸಿದರೆ, ಅದರಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಶೇಷ ಶಕ್ತಿ ತುಂಬಿ ದೈವ ಕಳೆ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ ಎನ್ನುವ ವಿವರಣೆ ಕೂಡ 'Sapiens ' ಅನ್ನುವ ಪುಸ್ತಕದಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ಮೂರ್ತಿ ಪೂಜೆಯನ್ನು ವಿರೋಧಿಸಿದ ಬುದ್ಧ. ನಶ್ವರವನ್ನೇ ಶಿವನೆಂದರು ನಮ್ಮ ವಚನಕಾರರು.

ಆದರೆ ಅವೆಲ್ಲವನ್ನು ಬದಿಗಿಟ್ಟು ವಿಚಾರ ಮಾಡಿದಾಗ ನನಗೆ ಅನ್ನಿಸಿದ್ದು ಇಷ್ಟು. ಆದಿ ಮಾನವ ಬೆಟ್ಟ ಗುಡ್ಡಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಸ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದ. ಆಗ ಅವನು ಪೂಜಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ದೈವಗಳು ಕೂಡ ಬೆಟ್ಟದೆ ಮೇಲೆಯೇ ಇದ್ದವು. ಮುಂದೆ ಆ ಮಾನವ ಬೆಟ್ಟ ಇಳಿದು ಬಯಲಿಗೆ ಬಂದು, ವ್ಯವಸಾಯ ಕಲಿತು ನಾಗರಿಕನಾದ. ಆದರೆ ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ದೈವವನ್ನು ಮರೆಯಲಿಲ್ಲ. ತನ್ನ ನಾಗರಿಕತೆಗೆ ತಕ್ಕಂತೆ ತಾನು ಪೂಜಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಜಾಗವನ್ನು ಗುಡಿಯಾಗಿ ಮಾರ್ಪಡಿಸಿದ. ತನಗೆ ಬೆಟ್ಟ ಹತ್ತಿ, ಇಳಿಯಲು ಅನುಕೂಲವಾಗಲೆಂದು ಮೆಟ್ಟಿಲು ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಿದ. ಶತಮಾನಗಳು ಕಳೆದರು ಆ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನಗಳ ಮೇಲಿನ ಅವನ ಭಕ್ತಿ ಕಡಿಮೆ ಆಗಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಮನುಷ್ಯ ಸಮಾಜದ ಏಳಿಗೆ ಬಯಸುವ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಗಳು ಎಲ್ಲ ಕಾಲಕ್ಕೂ ಇರುತ್ತಾರಲ್ಲ. ಅವರು ಸಮಾಜ ಒಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಕೂಡಲಿ ಎನ್ನುವ ಉದ್ದೇಶದಿಂದ, ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ಮೇಲಿನ ದೈವದ ಹೆಸರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಜಾತ್ರೆ, ಪೂಜೆಗಳನ್ನು ಏರ್ಪಾಡು ಮಾಡಿದರು. ಹೀಗೆ ದೈವ ಸಮಾಜದ ಒಗ್ಗಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಮುಖ್ಯ ಕಾರಣವಾಯ್ತು.

ಅಷ್ಟೇ ಅಲ್ಲ. ಬೆಟ್ಟ ಹತ್ತಿದ ದಣಿವು ಮನುಷ್ಯನ ಅರೋಗ್ಯ ಸುಧಾರಿಸುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ಮೇಲಿನಿಂದ ನೋಡಿದರೆ, ಮನುಷ್ಯನಿಗೆ ತನ್ನ ಮನೆ ಎಷ್ಟು ಚಿಕ್ಕದು ಕಾಣುತ್ತಲ್ಲವೇ? ಹಾಗೆಯೆ ಆ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿನ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆಗಳು ಕೂಡ ಇನ್ನು ಚಿಕ್ಕವು ಎನ್ನುವ ಅರಿವು ಅವನಿಗೆ ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ಮೇಲೆ ಮೂಡಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯ. ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕುಳಿತಾಗ ಬೆಟ್ಟದಂತಹ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆ ಅನಿಸಿದ್ದು, ಬೆಟ್ಟ ಹತ್ತಿ ನಿಂತಾಗ ಬದಲಾಗಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯ ಇದೆ. ಹಾಗೆಯೆ ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ವಾತಾವರಣ ಕೂಡ ಬೇರೆಯೇ. ಬಯಲಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಳೆಯದ ಗಿಡ, ಮರಗಳು,  ಬಯಲಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಣದ ಪ್ರಾಣಿ, ಪಕ್ಷಿಗಳು ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಣುತ್ತವೆ. ಮೆಟ್ಟಿಲ ಮೇಲೆ ಮೆಲ್ಲಗೆ ಸಾಗುವ ಝರಿಗಳು, ಪಕ್ಕದ ಗುಡ್ಡದಿಂದ ಕೇಳಿಸುವ ನವಿಲಿನ ಕೇಕೆ, ಬಯಲಿಗಿಂತ ಬೆಟ್ಟವನ್ನು ಇಷ್ಟ ಪಡುವ ಮಂಗಗಳು, ಕಲ್ಲಿನಡಿ ಮಲಗಿರಬಹುದಾದ ಸರಿಸೃಪಗಳು ಮನುಷ್ಯನನ್ನು ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಕಾಲಕ್ಕಾದರೂ ಬೇರೆಯ ಲಹರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇರುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತವೆ.

ಬೆಟ್ಟ ಇಳಿದು, ಹೊಟ್ಟೆ ಹಸಿವು ಇಂಗಿಸಲು ಹತ್ತಿರದ ಹೋಟೆಲಿಗೆ ತೆರಳಿದೆ. ಆದರೆ ನನ್ನ ವಿಚಾರ ಸರಣಿ ಮತ್ತೆ ಮುಂದುವರೆಯಿತು.

ಕಾಲಕ್ಕೆ ತಕ್ಕಂತೆ ಮಾರ್ಪಾಡು ಆದರೂ, ಆದಿ ಮಾನವನಲ್ಲಿ ಅಡಗಿದ್ದ ಜೀನ್ ಗಳು ನಮ್ಮ ಪೀಳಿಗೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಸಾಗಿ ಬಂದು, ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಸ್ವಾರ್ಥಿಗಳಾಗಿ, ಜೀವನ ಸಂಗಾತಿ ಹುಡುಕಿ ವಂಶ ಮುಂದುವರೆಯುವಂತೆ ಪ್ರಚೋದಿಸುವುದರ ಜೊತೆಗೆ, ತಾವು ಬದುಕ್ಕಿದ್ದ ಕಾಲ ಘಟ್ಟವನ್ನು ಮರೆಯದೆ, ಮೂಲಗಳನ್ನು ಹುಡುಕಿ ಕೊಂಡು ಹೋಗುವ ಪ್ರಚೋದನೆಗಳನ್ನು ಕೂಡ ಮಾಡುತ್ತದೆ.

ನನ್ನ ತಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿರುವುದು ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ಬದನೇಕಾಯಿ ಗಿಡವೋ ಎನ್ನುವ ಸಂಶಯ ಮೂಡಿ, ಚಹಾ ಹೀರುತ್ತಾ ಸುತ್ತಲಿನ ಜನರನ್ನು ಗಮನಿಸತೊಡಗಿದೆ.

ಚಿಕ್ಕಂದಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಶಾಲೆ ಓದುತ್ತಿರುವಾಗ ಬಡ ಸ್ನೇಹಿತರನ್ನು ತನ್ನ ಮನೆಗೆ ಊಟಕ್ಕೆ (ವಾರಾನ್ನ) ಕರೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಹೋಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಸ್ನೇಹಿತ ಕಣ್ಣಿಗೆ ಬಿದ್ದ. ಈಗ ಅವನು ತನ್ನ ಅಂಗಡಿಯ ಮುಂದೆ ಗೋವಿನ ಪೂಜೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಹಣ್ಣು ತಿನ್ನಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದ. ಚಿಕ್ಕಂದಿನ ಅವನ ನಡುವಳಿಕೆ ನಲವತ್ತು ವರುಷ ಕಳೆದರು ಬದಲಾಗಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಕಾರಣ ಅವನಲ್ಲಿನ ಜೀನ್ ಗಳು ಎಂದಾದರೆ, ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ದೈವದ ಆಕರ್ಷಣೆ ಕೂಡ ನಮ್ಮ ಪೂರ್ವಜರ ಬಳುವಳಿ ಏಕಾಗಿರಬಾರದು?

ಸಾವಿರಾರು ವರುಷ ಹಿಂದೆ ಬದುಕಿದ್ದ ನಮ್ಮ ಹಿರಿಯರು, ತಮ್ಮ ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ದೈವದ ನಂಬಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ಕೂಡ ನಮಗೆ ವರ್ಗಾಯಿಸುತ್ತ ಹೋದರು. ಕೆಲ ಪೀಳಿಗೆಯವರು ಸುಸಜ್ಜಿತ ಗುಡಿ ಕಟ್ಟಿದರೆ, ಇನ್ನು ಕೆಲವರು ಮೆಟ್ಟಿಲು ಕಟ್ಟಿದರು. ಇಂದಿನ ಪೀಳಿಗೆಯವರು ಆ ಮೆಟ್ಟಿಲುಗಳಿಗೆ ಸುಣ್ಣ ಬಳಿದು ಅಂದ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿಸಿದರು. ನಾನು ತಪ್ಪದೆ ಪ್ರತಿ ವರುಷ ದರ್ಶನಕ್ಕೆ ಬರುತ್ತೇನೆ.   

ಪುರಾವೆ ಕೇಳುವ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಂದೆ ಒಂದು ದಿನ ಇವೆಲ್ಲವುಗಳಿಗೆ ಸಮರ್ಪಕ ವಿವರಣೆ ಸಿಗಬಹುದು. ನನಗೆ ದೇವರ ಮುಂದೆ ತಲೆ ಬಾಗಿಸುವುದನ್ನು ಕಲಿಸಿದ ಅಜ್ಜಿಯ ಭಕ್ತಿ ನನಗೆ ಅಂಧಾನುಕರಣೆ ಅನಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಇವತ್ತಿಗೆ ನನ್ನ ಅಜ್ಜಿ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಮುಂದೆ ಒಂದು ದಿನ ನಾನೂ ಇರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಆದರೆ ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ದೈವ ಇರುತ್ತದೆ. ಹಾಗೆಯೆ ಶ್ರೀ ಮಲ್ಲಿಕಾರ್ಜುನನ ಭಕ್ತರು  ಯಾವತ್ತಿಗೂ ಇರುತ್ತಾರೆ.

ಬಯಲು ಗಣೇಶ, ಸರ್ಕಲ್ ಮಾರಮ್ಮ

ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ವೈವಿಧ್ಯತೆ ತುಂಬಿದ ಊರು. ಅದು ಸಾಧ್ಯವಾಗಿದ್ದು ಅಲ್ಲಿನ ವಲಸಿಗರಿಂದ. ಬರೀ ಬೀದರ್ ನಿಂದ ಚಾಮರಾಜನಗರ ವರೆಗಿನ ಜನ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಬಂದು ನೆಲೆಗೊಂಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಎಂದುಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಡಿ. ಕಾಶ್ಮೀರ್ ದಿಂದ ಕನ್ಯಾಕುಮಾರಿ ವರೆಗಿನ ಜನ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ತಮ್ಮ ಮನೆ ಕಟ್ಟಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಎನ್ನುವುದು ಸೂಕ್ತ. ಇಲ್ಲಿರುವ MNC ಕಂಪನಿ ಗಳನ್ನು ನಿರ್ವಹಣೆ ಮಾಡಲಿಕ್ಕೆ ವಿದೇಶಿಯರು ಕೂಡ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಲೆ ಕಂಡುಕೊಂಡಿರುವುದು ನೀವು ಗಮನಿಸಬಹುದು. ವಿವಿಧ ದೇಶ, ಭಾಷೆ, ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಯ ಜನರು ಒಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಬದುಕಿದಾಗ ಅಲ್ಲಿಯ ಜನರ ಬದುಕು ಕೂಡ ವೈವಿಧ್ಯವಾಗುತ್ತ ಹೋಗುತ್ತದೆ.

ಜನ ಬಂದ ಮೇಲೆ ಅವರ ದೇವರುಗಳು ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿಗೆ ಬರದೇ ಇರುತ್ತಾರೆಯೇ? ಶಿವ, ವಿಷ್ಣು, ಪಾರ್ವತೀ, ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಿ, ಗಣೇಶ, ಆಂಜನೇಯ, ಪೈಗಂಬರ್, ಜೀಸಸ್, ಗುರು ನಾನಕ್ ಹೀಗೆ ಎಲ್ಲ ಧರ್ಮದ ದೇವರುಗಳು ಕೂಡ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠಾಪಿತರಾಗಿದ್ದರೆ. ಅದರಲ್ಲೂ ದೇವಿಯ ಹಲವು ರೂಪಗಳು - ಬನಶಂಕರಿ, ರಾಜ ರಾಜೇಶ್ವರಿ, ಮೀನಾಕ್ಷಿ ಎಲ್ಲರ ಹೆಸರಲ್ಲೂ ದೊಡ್ಡ ದೊಡ್ಡ ದೇವಾಲಯಗಳು ಇವೆ. ಹಾಗೆಯೆ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ನಾಡ ದೇವಿಯಾದ ಅಣ್ಣಮ್ಮ ದೇವಿಯು ಕೂಡ ಭಕ್ತಿಯಿಂದ ಪೂಜಿಸಲ್ಪಡುತ್ತಾಳೆ.

ನಿಮಗೆ ತಿರುಪತಿಗೆ ಹೋಗುವುದು ದೂರ ಎನಿಸಿದರೆ, ಶ್ರೀನಿವಾಸನ ದರ್ಶನವನ್ನು, ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಹೊರವಲಯದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ರಾಮೋಹಳ್ಳಿಯ ಅದೇ ಶೈಲಿಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾಡಬಹುದು. ರಾಘವೇಂದ್ರರ ದರ್ಶನಕ್ಕೆ ನೀವು ಮಂತ್ರಾಲಯಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗಬೇಕಿಲ್ಲ. ಮಾಗಡಿ ರಸ್ತೆಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಕಾಮಧೇನು ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗಬಹುದು. ಸರ್ಪದೋಷ ನಿವಾರಣೆ ಪೂಜೆಗೆ ಕುಕ್ಕೆಗೆ ಹೋಗಬೇಕೆಂದಿಲ್ಲ. ಬದಲಾಗಿ ಮುಕ್ತಿನಾಗ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗಬಹುದು. ದೂರದ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನಗಳಿಗೆ ಹೋಗುವ ಬದಲು ಹೆಚ್ಚು-ಕಡಿಮೆ ಅದೇ ಅನುಭವ ನಿಮಗೆ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಲ್ಲೇ ಲಭ್ಯ. ಹಾಗೆಯೆ ಯೋಗ ಸಾಧನೆಗೆ ಸದ್ಗುರು, ಶ್ರೀ ರವಿಶಂಕರ್, ಪತ್ರೀಜಿಯವರ ಪಿರಮಿಡ್ ಎಲ್ಲವೂ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿಂದ ಒಂದೆರಡು ಘಂಟೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ತಲುಪಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯ.

ಆದರೆ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಗುಡಿಗಳ ವೈಶಿಷ್ಟ್ಯ ಏನೆಂದರೆ, ದೇವ-ದೇವಿಯರ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನಗಳು ಬರೀ ಅವರ ಶಕ್ತಿನಾಮಗಳನ್ನು ಒಳಗೊಳ್ಳದೆ ಅವು ಯಾವ ಸ್ಥಳಗಳಲ್ಲಿವೆ ಅದರ ಗುರುತು ಆ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನದ ಹೆಸರಿನೊಂದಿಗೆ ಸೇರಿಕೊಂಡಿವೆ. ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗೆ, ಬಯಲು ಗಣೇಶ, ಸರ್ಕಲ್ ಮಾರಮ್ಮ, ಕಣಿವೆ ಆಂಜನೇಯ. ಊರು ಮತ್ತು ಹೊರ ವಲಯ ಬೆಳೆದಂತೆಲ್ಲ  ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನಗಳು ಕೂಡ ಅವುಗಳಿಗೆ ಹೊಂದಿಕೊಂಡು ಈ ಊರಿನ ವಿಶೇಷ ಗುರುತುಗಳಾಗಿವೆ.

ಬೆಟ್ಟ ಹತ್ತುವ, ಪ್ರಾಕೃತಿಕ ಸೌಂದರ್ಯ ತುಂಬಿದ ನಿರ್ಜನ ಪ್ರದೇಶಗಳನ್ನು ನೋಡುವ ಆನಂದ ಚಾರಣರಿಗಷ್ಟೇ ಗೊತ್ತು. ಅದನ್ನು ಸೆರೆ ಹಿಡಿಯಬಯಸುವವರ ಕತ್ತಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾವಾಗಲು ನೇತಾಡುತಿರುತ್ತದೆ ಕ್ಯಾಮೆರಾ. ಇನ್ನೂ ಕೆಲವರು ತಿಂಡಿಪೋತರು. ತಾವು ಹೋದ ಎಲ್ಲ ಊರುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅಲ್ಲಿಯ ವಿಶಿಷ್ಟ ತಿಂಡಿ ಸವಿಯುವದಲ್ಲದೆ, ತಮಗಿಷ್ಟವಾದ ತಿಂಡಿ ಆ ಊರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಗೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾರೆ ಎಂದು ತಿಂದು ನೋಡುವ ಚಪಲ. 'ಅದೇ ಮಸಾಲೆ ದೋಸೆ ಮಾರಾಯ' ಎಂದು ನೀವು ಅವರಿಗೆ ಹೇಳಿದರೆ, 'ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಉಪ್ಪುಕಡಿಮೆ, ಖಾರ ಜಾಸ್ತಿ, ಸಾಂಬಾರ ನಲ್ಲಿ ಅದು ಏನೋ ವಿಶಿಷ್ಟತೆ ಇದೆ' ಎಂದೆಲ್ಲ ಹೇಳಿ ನಮ್ಮ ಬಾಯಿ ಮುಚ್ಚಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಹೌದಲ್ಲವೇ, ಅವರ ಆನಂದ ಬೇರೆಯವರಿಗೆಲ್ಲಿ ತಿಳಿಯಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯ? ಕೆಲವರಿಗೆ ರಾಜಕೀಯದ ಹುಚ್ಚು. ಇನ್ನೂ ಕೆಲವರಿಗೆ ದೇಶ ಸುತ್ತಿ ಬರುವ ಹವ್ಯಾಸ. 

ನಿಮ್ಮ ಸುತ್ತ ಮುತ್ತಲಿರುವ ಎಲ್ಲರನ್ನು ಗಮನಿಸಿ ನೋಡಿ. ಕೆಲವರು ಸುಮ್ಮನೆ ಕುಳಿತು ಹರಟೆ ಹೊಡೆದರೆ, ಕೆಲವರು ಇನ್ನೊಬ್ಬರ ಸಂಸಾರದಲ್ಲಿ ಮೂಗು ತೋರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಕೆಲವರಿಗೆ ಹಣ ಗಳಿಸುವದೇ ಆನಂದ. ಕೆಲವರು ಪ್ರಾಣಿ, ಪಕ್ಷಿ ಸಾಕಿ ಆ ಜಗತ್ತಿನಲ್ಲೇ ಮುಳುಗಿ ಹೋಗಿರುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಕೆಲವರು ಭಕ್ತಿ ಪ್ರಿಯರು. ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನ ಸುತ್ತುವ, ಪ್ರಸಾದ ಹಂಚುವ ಕಾಯಕ ಅವರಿಗೆ ತುಂಬಾ ಇಷ್ಟ. ಹೀಗೆ ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಬ್ಬರಿಗೂ ಆನಂದ ಕೊಡುವ ಹವ್ಯಾಸ (ಅಥವಾ ದುರಭ್ಯಾಸಗಳು) ಇದ್ದೇ ಇರುತ್ತವೆ. ಅದು ಬೇರೆಯವರಿಗೆ  ಅರ್ಥವಾಗದೆ ಹೋಗಬಹುದು. ಬಲ್ಲವರಿಗಷ್ಟೇ ಗೊತ್ತು ಅದರ ಮರ್ಮ.

ನನಗಿರುವುದು ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳ ಗೀಳು. 'ಈಗಿನ ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾರು ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಓದುತ್ತಾರೆ?' ಎನ್ನುವುದು ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ಜನರ ಉದ್ಗಾರ. ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಓದುವ ಆನಂದ ಅವರೇನು ಬಲ್ಲರು?  ಮತ್ತು ಬೇರೆಯವರ ವಿಚಾರಗಳಿಗೆ ನಾವೇಕೆ ಆನಂದ ಕಳೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕು? ಚಿಕ್ಕಂದಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಓದಿದ ಅಮರ ಚಿತ್ರ ಕಥೆ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳು, ಪ್ರತಿ ವಾರ ಓದುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಸುಧಾ, ತರಂಗ ವಾರಪತ್ರಿಕೆಗಳು, ಸುಮ್ಮನೆ ಕುತೂಹಲಕ್ಕೆಂದು ಅಕ್ಕ ಓದುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಯ ಕೆಲವು ಪುಟಗಳು ಇವುಗಳನ್ನು ಬಿಟ್ಟರೆ ಪೂರ್ಣ ಪ್ರಮಾಣದ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಓದಿದ್ದು ಏಳನೆಯ ತರಗತಿ ಮುಗಿದ ಮೇಲೆ ಬಂದ ಬೇಸಿಗೆ ರಜೆಯಲ್ಲಿ. ಅದು ತೇಜಸ್ವಿ ಅವರು ಬರೆದ ಕಿರು ಕಾದಂಬರಿ 'ಕರ್ವಾಲೋ'. ಅಲ್ಲಿಂದ ಆರಂಭ ನನ್ನ ಮತ್ತು ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳ ಗೆಳೆತನ.

ಯಂಡಮೂರಿಯವರ ಸರಳತೆ, ಚಿತ್ತಾಲರ ಗಂಭೀರತೆ, ಕುವೆಂಪುರವರ ಪ್ರಕೃತಿ ಪ್ರೀತಿ, ತೇಜಸ್ವಿಯವರ ಕ್ರಿಯಾಶೀಲತೆ, ಭೈರಪ್ಪ-ಅನಂತ ಮೂರ್ತಿಯವರ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿನ   ವೈಚಾರಿಕತೆ, ಕಾರಂತರ ಜೀವನ ಪ್ರೀತಿ ಇವುಗಳನ್ನು ಸವಿದು ಮುಂದೆ ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳಿಗೆ ಜಿಗಿದಿದ್ದಾಯಿತು, ಟಾಗೋರ್ ಅವರ ಸಣ್ಣ ಕಥೆಗಳು, ಟಾಲ್ಸ್ಟಾಯ್ ಅವರ ಕಾದಂಬರಿಗಳು ನನ್ನ ಜೀವನ ಅನುಭವವನ್ನು ವಿಸ್ತಾರಗೊಳಿಸಿದವು. ನಾನಾ ದೇಶದ ಲೇಖಕರ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳು ಮುರಕಮಿ (ಜಪಾನ್), ಮಾರ್ಕ್ಯೂಜ್ (ಕೊಲಂಬಿಯಾ), ಹೆಮಿಂಗ್ವೇ (ಅಮೇರಿಕ), ಹರ್ಮನ್ ಹೆಸ್ಸೆ (ಜರ್ಮನಿ), ಬೆನ್ ಒಕ್ರಿ (ಆಫ್ರಿಕಾ) ಹೀಗೆ ವಿವಿಧತೆ ತುಂಬಿದ ಪುಸ್ತಗಳು ಕೈ ಸೇರತೊಡಗಿದವು.

ಎಲ್ಲಿ ಹೋದಲ್ಲಿ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳು ನನ್ನ ಜೊತೆಗೆ. ಆಫೀಸ್ ಗೆ ಹೋಗುವಾಗ ಬರುವಾಗ ಬಸ್ ನಲ್ಲಿ ಕುಳಿಕೊಂಡಾಗ ಸಿಗುವ ಸಮಯ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳಿಗೆ ಮೀಸಲಾಯಿತು. ಆಗ ನೆಹರು ಅವರು ಬರೆದ 'Glimpses of World History' ಎನ್ನುವ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಓದಲು ಕೆಲವು ತಿಂಗಳುಗಳು ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದೆ. ಊರಿಗೆ ಹೊರಟರೆ ನನ್ನ ಬ್ಯಾಗ್ ನಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದಲ್ಲ ಒಂದು ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಇದ್ದೇ ಇರುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಹಾಗೆಯೆ ಕಾರಲ್ಲಿ ಹೊರಟರೆ ಕನಿಷ್ಠ ಮೂರ್ನಾಲ್ಕು ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳು ಜೊತೆಯಾಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದವು. ಅಲ್ಲದೆ Kindle ಬಂದಾಗಿನಿಂದ ಅದರಲ್ಲೂ ನೂರಾರು ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳು.

ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಓದುವ ಹವ್ಯಾಸ ನನಗೆ ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ಹೊಸ ಗೆಳೆಯರನ್ನು ಹುಡುಕಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿತು. ಆದರೆ ಹಳೆಯ ಗೆಳೆಯರು ನನ್ನ ಈ ಹವ್ಯಾಸ ನೋಡಿ ಕೆಲವರು ಆಶ್ಚರ್ಯ ಪಟ್ಟರೆ, ಕೆಲವರು ಕನಿಕರ ತೋರಿಸಿದರು. ಒಬ್ಬ ಸ್ನೇಹಿತ ಮುಖಕ್ಕೆ ಹೊಡೆದಂತೆ ಹೇಳಿಯೇ ಬಿಟ್ಟ. "ನಾನು ಶಾಲೆ ಓದುವುದು ಮುಗಿದಾಗಿಂದ ಯಾವುದೇ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಓದಿಲ್ಲ. ನೀನು ಓದುತ್ತಿ ಎಂದರೆ ನಿನಗೆ ಯಾವುದೊ ದುಃಖ ಕಾಡುತ್ತಿದೆ" ಎಂದು ಸಂಶಯದಿಂದ ನನ್ನ ಮೇಲೆ ಕನಿಕರ ತೋರಿಸಿದ. ಅವನಿಗೆ ಹೇಳಿದೆ "ನಾನು ಪಿಚ್ಚರು ನೋಡುತ್ತೇನೆ, ಊರು ಸುತ್ತುತ್ತೇನೆ. ಆದರೆ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಓದುವ ಆನಂದ ಅದಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನದು". ಅವನು ಬೇರೆ ಏನು ಹೇಳಲಿಲ್ಲ ನಿನ್ನ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆ ನಿನಗೆ ಎನ್ನುವಂತೆ. ಬಲ್ಲವರೇ ಬಲ್ಲರು ಎನ್ನುವುದು ಅವನಿಗೂ ಗೊತ್ತು ಎನ್ನುವಂತೆ ನಾನು ಕೂಡ ಸುಮ್ಮನಾದೆ.

ಕಳೆದ ವಾರ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ವಿಜಯನಗರದಲ್ಲಿನ ಕನ್ನಡ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಮಾರುವ ಅಂಗಡಿಗೆ ಹೋಗಿದ್ದೆ. ಯಥಾ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ಹತ್ತು-ಹನ್ನೆರಡು ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳನ್ನು ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಂಡೆ. ವಸುಧೇಂದ್ರ, ಜೋಗಿ, ಕಾರಂತ ಮತ್ತು ಹೊಸ ಲೇಖಕರ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಕನಕದಾಸರ ಕೀರ್ತನೆಗಳು ನನ್ನ ಮಡಿಲು ಸೇರಿದವು. ಅವುಗಳನ್ನು ಅಂಗಡಿಯವರು ಕೊಟ್ಟ ಬ್ಯಾಗ್ ನಲ್ಲಿ ಹಾಕಿಕೊಂಡು ಅವುಗಳನ್ನು ನನ್ನ ದ್ವಿ ಚಕ್ರ ವಾಹನದಲ್ಲಿ ನೇತಾಡಲು ಬಿಟ್ಟು,  ಸ್ನೇಹಿತನ ಜೊತೆ ಚಹಾ ಕುಡಿಯಲು ಹೋದೆ. ವಾಪಸ್ಸು ಬಂದರೆ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳ ಚೀಲ ಹಾಗೆಯೆ ನೇತಾಡುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಅದನ್ನು ನೋಡಿ ನನ್ನ ಸ್ನೇಹಿತ ಹೇಳಿದ 'ಯಾರಾದರೂ ಹಳೆಯ ಚಪ್ಪಲಿ ಕಳ್ಳತನ ಮಾಡಬಹುದು ಆದರೆ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳನ್ನು ಮುಟ್ಟುವುದಿಲ್ಲ'. ಆ ಮಾತು ನಿಜ ಅನ್ನಿಸಿತು. ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಕಳ್ಳತನವಾದರೂ ಅವುಗಳು ಕೊಡುವ ವಿದ್ಯೆ, ಜ್ಞಾನ , ಆನಂದ ಕಳ್ಳತನ ಮಾಡಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯವೇ?

ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಸಮಾಜ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳನ್ನು ಅಸಡ್ಡೆಯಿಂದ ನೋಡಿದರೆ ಅದು ಅವರ ನಷ್ಟ ಅಷ್ಟೇ. ಇಷ್ಟಕ್ಕೂ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಪ್ರೇಮಿಗಳು ಅದಕ್ಕೆಲ್ಲಿ ತಲೆ ಕೆಡಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾರೆ? ಬಲ್ಲವರೇ ಬಲ್ಲರು ಎಂದುಕೊಂಡು ಸುಮ್ಮನಾಗುತ್ತಾರೆ.

Short Movie: If Anything Happens I Love You

This short movie is only 12 mins long. It is a 2D animated movie, mostly black and white and colors used to bring attention and depict positive emotions. There are no dialogues in the movie, only background music and a song.

It is a family of husband, wife and a daughter. Husband and wife are not on talking terms and their shadows represent dark emotions. They are in grief with the loss of their only daughter. She was shot and  killed when she was at school. Her last message to her parents was 'If Anything Happens I Love You'.

While doing household activities, mother is reminded of her daughter. All the memories come back to life. Her husband too joins her. Daughter's shadow brings her parents together.

Animated characters in this movie bring deep emotions to the surface. No parent would like to lose their child. But if it happens, it can be a very sad event for them. Life can take sudden turns. So you would agree with the message of the movie: 'If Anything Happens I Love You'.

This movie did win an Oscar award. I watched this on Netflix.

Reaching Zenith, and struggling to remain there

Sales from Products & Services: A Company's sales from products decline while it's revenue from services go up. In a normal scenario, one would assume this indicating a saturation for its product market. But the products are still relevant, so the service revenue is high.

Sales across Geography: If the products are premium priced, and US being a developed economy and India being a developing economy, sales going down in the US but going up in India would indicate the product penetration across geography is coming to an end. What happens in the US is bound to happen in India too, but with a time lag.

Well, that is Apple for you. It is seeing revenue decline for three quarters in a row.

When iPhones were launched around 15 years ago, citizens of the US queued up to buy them. And at that time, people in India barely had any idea what it would be like to hold it in their hands. That has changed now. Euphoria for Apple's products seem to be waning in the US, while India's consumers are still riding the wave. 

iPhones (& other Apple products as well) are luxury products. Mass market cannot afford them. So, what happened in the US - its sales reaching a saturation, would happen in India too. It is just a matter of time. Apple's product penetration seems to be in the final lap. And afterwards, it's sales decline would gather further steam. That seems to be the underlying trend.

Apple's founder and star marketer, Steve Jobs, died more than a decade ago. But his legend is not. The company he had built did well for many years even after his death, but how long this will go on? Apple has not launched any significant new product after Steve's death. While it did manage to upgrade its existing products, company's conference calls and management's interactions with the market appear dull. 

As markets change and consumers move on once in a while, can Apple continue to dominate the mobile market? We don't know what all things Apple has in its arsenal. Since Apple does not make bold announcements before it is ready, it is difficult to assume things. But the excitement of consumers is fading away and that is being reflected in sales topping out and declining slowly.

World's biggest company need to be watched what it does to remain in the top as it seems to be struggling there. That too when it does not have any real competition currently. But the danger is, new technologies (AI, AR/VR) coupled with a broader ecosystem of wide ranging players can take the market away from Apple. All second level players want to be Apple. They will easily gang up against Apple, by either coordinating with each other or making partnerships. 

Apple had killed many products and companies in the past which were ignorant of what Apple was developing. Now, if Apple does not act, tables might turn in due time.
